12085/B/Servemeet Singh Soin
Lieutenant Colonel
Joined NDA as an innocent kid who could not even tie his turban properly, and needed extra turban parades. He always told his name in a sing-song voice- "Servemeet Singh soiiiiiiiinnnnn sirrrrrrr." He also got punished for saying 'Sir' twice while stating his name- "Sir meet Singh soiiiinnn sirrrr". Soin was also nicknamed as the baby of the course. He would utter something funny in course fall-in, and the entire course got punished.
The strong spirit in Servemeet Singh Soin could never get affected, whatever the trial or tribulation. Even when down in the dumps after a trying time, he was always the first to bounce back. Soin showed his resilience and through persistence and hard work became one of the fittest in our course and excelled in PT. He helped his mates who were weak in PT to pass the tests. He was an ultimate team man, and would even be ready to do the 7-meter jump for someone else. Such a sweet, jolly, and helpful guy he was. He would volunteer to carry the loads of others during camps. Two phrases would appropriately describe him... "INNOCENT AS A KID" and "TEAMMATE."
Commissioned into 17 Kumaon Regiment, he volunteered and shifted to the Para Commandos in Nov 1982. He was attached to the Chennai Sub Area on temp duty as a Young Officer for a special assignment to train police Special Forces and screwed the hell out of them. He served in Army till Sep 2003 with the last posting being at DG Infantry/Infantry-7 at Army HQ. He enjoyed Operational Service at Sri Lanka and the Siachen Glacier among others.
After retirement, he worked with Biostadt India Limited (An Associate of Wockhardt Life Sciences) from Mar 2004 - Jun 2006 as Project Director. Later he served as VP at Reliance Capital from Jun 2006 - Dec 2009 and as Senior VP in the same Company till Mar 2014. He also worked in Bahrain for some time. Surprisingly, for a Classification 6 student- Four-star Torch holder in retests from NDA, did LLB from Delhi University, LLM from Annamalai University, and MBA (HR) from IGNOU (First Division). He was a Certified Fraud Examiner from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, USA as also a Certified Protection Professional from American Society of Industrial Safety. Last but not least, he did The Army Staff Course! He was very helpful to his mates who were trying to resettle in the corporate world. A friend of friends and a soldier to core.
Four and a half years ago Soin and Mitsu had gone for an evening walk. He was walking a little ahead of his wife. When she heard a slight commotion, and by the time she could reach him, he was gone. He died as he lived, always on the go. He embodied the philosophy of carpe diem and never stopped to stand and stare. A gregarious person, he was always looking for fresh challenges and new things to learn. He went early but packed a lot of living into his life.
He is survived by lady wife Mitsu and their son Sikander. Soin's philosophy of living in the present is what has enabled the family to deal with his passing. They cherish the memories that he has left them with but look forward to the fresh challenges life brings. Sikandar is working towards a PhD in economics at the University of Edinburg, and Mitsu lives and works in Delhi.
🙏May his soul rest in peace🙏
