56-57/I/G Vinod
Commander
Vinod, hailing from the backwaters of God's Own Country, Kerala, stood out as one of the top students in his batch from Sainik School, Amaravathinagar. His school days were a tapestry of achievements, having excelled in science and mathematics; with history and astrophysics being his favorites. He was proficient at swimming and a talent on the stage.
Vinod joined the 56th NDA Course in 1976. He took some time to settle down and went through two squadrons, finally passing out from India Squadron. His journey continued at the Naval College of Engineering (NCE), INS Shivaji, Lonavla, in the early '80s. Vinod, unlike most, embraced the academic challenges, excelling in engineering subjects that left others flummoxed. In his naval career, Vinod proved to be an outstanding Engineering Officer, leading his Engine Room crew with finesse.
Vinod possessed a world view that transcended his peers; he effortlessly connected historical knowledge with contemporary politics, fostering well-formed opinions. A polymath at heart, Vinod was an environmentalist, philosopher, amateur astronomer, music aficionado, cinema critic, voracious reader, and trekker. His passions, contagious and diverse, left a lasting impact on those around him. Friends sought his guidance, and he, in his subdued manner, offered counsel with panache and a wry sense of humor.
Vinod was deeply secular at a fundamental level and his value system was truly liberal. This fact is reflected in his unusual choice of school for his two sons educated at the Centre For Learning(CFL), a reputed alternate school on the outskirts of Bangalore based on Jiddu Krishnamurti’s philosophy. Education and value system were at the core of his heart and he went through all the hardship it takes to get his sons admitted in this institution. He and his wife, Sara, actively participated at the experiential learning school. Eventually their efforts ensured his sons pursued their passions – one becoming a teacher and the other a social activist.
Despite not being a conformist, he served the Navy for the obligatory 20 years before transitioning to civilian life.Post-military service, Vinod pursued various passions:as Chief Engineer of sea going vessels at Ambuja for over a decade, a stint in farming andin education. He held the appointment ofDirector, Institute of Maritime Education and Research at the Regional Campus of Anna University, Coimbatore, besides serving as the Controller of Examinations during its formative years. On relocating to Bangalore, he focused on youth development, his commitment to education extending to a successful stint in computer network education.
In pursuit of sustainable development, Vinod moved to Pondicherry, where he built a solar-powered dream house and actively supported philanthropic activities. His love for travel, particularly the mountains, remained a constant. Vinod's dedication to family was unwavering. He formed deep connections with his close friends and had named his two sons after his friends in the Navy - the elder son Deepak takes his name from Deepak Vishvanathan and Sandeep, the younger one from Sandeep Sharma.
Vinod was an "Eternal Explorer", lived on his own terms, guided only by his strong moral compass. He was blessed with abundance of compassion and care that he shared with all.May his adventurous spirit and multifaceted legacy live on in our memories.RIP dear Vinod.
